I bought my first camera in July 2018 to take some photos of a friend at an equine event, and like many people, I thought by buying a DSLR, I would automatically get great photos, I soon realised this wasn’t the case. So I quickly lost interest and the camera went back in the box for a few weeks, until I was given some photography books by a friend. The first book I read was Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson and it blew my mind. Intially I didn’t have an actual genre I wanted to pursue but after a few outings to the local beach of my residence at that time, Aberystywth, West Wales, some practice, and many hours of reading books and watching Youtube videos, I soon developed a passion for nature and the outdoors.
Many photographers have a style, I don’t, I like to photograph anything and everything landscape related. This means while out on a shoot, I may capture a typical mountain vista with amazing light, an hour later I could be capturing a simple minimalistic or abstract shot that would not seem like it was in the same location.
I would describe myself as an opportunistic photographer, while I do like to plan a lot of my shoots, I often find myself going out and just seeing what catches my eye, over time some of my favourite shots are from having no pre conceived notions or plans, just simply keeping my options and my eyes open. For a while I hated this way of shooting and I would never feel like I was working like a proper photographer, but eventually I learned to embrace it, this approach keeps me motivated and avoids me burning out.
I hope to make images for many years to come and I hope people will enjoy my work and perhaps be inspired to get out and enjoy what nature has to offer.
